Tilt Social Share Widget

Social Icons

Tilt Social Share Widget is my first WordPress plugin. It was developed to suit my need – and hopefully other people’s too – to have a simple and configurable way to let users share my content.

Available services

With Tilt Social Share Widget, you can enable the following sharing services:

  • Del.icio.us
  • Design Bumb
  • Diigo
  • Digg
  • Evernote
  • Facebook
  • Friendfeed
  • Google+
  • Google Bookmarks
  • Google Buzz
  • LinkedIn
  • Newsvine
  • Ping.fm
  • Pinterest
  • Posterous
  • Reddit
  • Slashdot
  • StumbleUpon
  • Technorati
  • Tumblr
  • Twitter
  • Yahoo Bookmarks

Settings

When you add the Tilt Social Share Widget to your site, you’ll find a few settings that are straight forward: Title; Where to display it (pages/posts); Which services to enable; Order.

In the Order field you can decide in which order you want the sharing services to appear. Just use the slugs separated by commas. You’ll find each service slug in the list above. You don’t have to insert every service. For instance if you want Facebook and Google+ to appear first, just add gplus, facebook. These will appear first, and the others will follow by alphabetic order.

Settings access

To access the widget settings, just drag it to one of your sidebars or other widget containers and you’ll be able to set it up to suit your needs.

Download

You can find Tilt Social Share Widget here. If you have any issues with it, just drop me a line.

Update

Now there’s also a changelog page where you’ll find the latest updates. If you have any changes to propose or find any bugs, please post it there on the comments.

Thank you.

Rival legal teams, well-financed and highly motivated, are girding for court battles over the coming months on laws enacted in Arkansas and North Dakota that would impose the nation’s toughest bans on abortion.
For all their differences, attorneys for the two states and the abortion-rights supporters opposing them agree on this: The laws represent an unprecedented frontal assault on the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion.
The Arkansas law, approved March 6 when legislators overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe, would ban most abortions from the 12th week of pregnancy onward. On March 26, North Dakota went further, with Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple signing a measure that would ban abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, when a fetal heartbeat can first be detected and before some women even know they’re pregnant.
Abortion-rights advocates plan to challenge both measures, contending they are unconstitutional violations of the Roe ruling that legalized abortion until a fetus could viably survive outside the womb. A fetus is generally considered viable at 22 to 24 weeks.

The plugin is working great in Mozilla and Chrome, but when I open it in Internet Explorer, the icons are appearing vertically instead of horizontally :s

Is there a possibility of using the pinterest pinmarklet overlay instead of the popup? I dislike only giving users one choice of image to pin. (Otherwise, I’m loving this plugin!)

Hi..! nice icons….loving them.
But, there’s a problem. When I’ve put the widget in the sidebar, the icons are piled up on each other and that looks ugly.
Could please help me with this issue. Is there a way by which I can make them look right below the post??

Great plug-in, but I cannot display the icons in a row on IE7, I see that in the CSS you did specify *display:inline; but it doesn’t seem to be picked up.

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

Hi Lisa,

I just took a look at your website and everything looks ok. Did you do anything, meanwhile?

Rui Oliveira
- 16 Aug 2012 - 14:16

Today the WordPress Social Share Widget is not showing icons for all of the social networking links on our site. They have been there for months, now they are gone. Maybe due to a recent WordPress update? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the widget – no luck. Please advise…http://peaceriverrefuge.org

@Vicky Jones,

You can look for the file “tilt-social-share-icons.png” on your plugins directory.

On the other hand, I just made the source available here: Make your own tilted icons.

Is this what you need?

Rui Oliveira

I like this plug in, and I would like to replicate the tilted icons on my printed materials. Is there a link where we can download them?

Thanks!

I’m on WP 3.1.1 Multisite. The error is showing up in Dashboard for sites which had this pluign already activated, including those sites with some content within the widget, and also a site that it was activated but had no content yet added.Deactivating and reactivating did not help. When I activated it on an existing site that had not yet had this pluign activated, it does not show the message so maybe it is something left over in the options table?I seem to be able to edit old post widgets content, I click into them and save edits, and have had no problem in the past. I can also create new post widgets. Existing sites seem to be rendering properly using the widgets. As far as I can tell everything is still working, just getting the error msg.Hope this helps. I’ll get more info to you as I try additional things.I’m using this pluign more and more all the time and find it very useful. Thanks!~Jeff 0

@Ricky,

I took a look to your website and it looks like the plugin CSS is not loading. When this happens it falls to a normal list.

Do you know if you have anything on your site that’s preventing this?
Also, make sure your theme uses the wp_footer() and wp_footer() functions.

Rui Oliveira
- 16 Jul 2012 - 21:50

Hey, the icons do not show up for me, its just a list?

Can I post my URL to show you? thiswebguy.com

Ricky
- 16 Jul 2012 - 15:49

@cenk kabahasanoğlu: Sorry to hear that. If you uninstalled the plugin and the site got back to work, then for sure it was because of Tilt Social Share.

However, upon my investigation, that error might relate to so many things that it’s hard for me to pin point and correct the reason why it is happening. However, I’ll contact you directly to give me a hand on solving the issue. Thanks.

Rui Oliveira
- 16 Jul 2012 - 12:58

@Radha: Hi the plugin works as a widget. You have to add it to one of your widget containers, like the sidebar or footer of your theme. It doesn’t work the way you describe.

Rui Oliveira

@Sonephet: Thanks for sharing that tip. I’m glad you like the plugin. Cheers!

Hi! I installed your plugin and it looks great! However, I checked the box for it the icons to show after each of my blog posts (in addition for it to show on my homepage as well as pages). however, the icons don’t show up after (under) each of my posts I’ve done since installing and activating this plug in. Why is that?

Great stuff!
I just wanted to share a small display customization out here which may save a few dozen minutes for semi-noobs of my kind. When I activated the plugin for the first time, my sharing buttons appeared packed together and the display was a bit suboptimal. I corrected the problem by changing style.css and allowing for 52 px width in tssw-item in stead of 32 px and adding a text-align: center; in tssw-list. It’s as simple as whipping out Firebug and modifying a CSS but even thinking about that took me a good 20 min ;)

@LL,

On your Widgets section (under Appearance) the Tilt Social Share Widget will be available to use. Just drag it to one of your sidebars or other widget containers and you’ll have access to it’s settings.

I already updated this post with this info.

Hope it helps. ;)

@Paul,

There’s no shortcode implemented yet. I do plan to have it, on one of the future releases, but I just can’t tell you for sure when it’s going to happen. Sorry.

Aurels
- 2 Jul 2012 - 11:33

Love the plugin. Just trying it out on a new install for the first time. Great so far. Just one question . . . Most of my “pages” do not use a sidebar at all. Is there any shortcode that will still allow me to place the share buttons on these pages inline with the content? Thanks for the help!

Paul
- 1 Jul 2012 - 16:23

@Aurels, @eCig One: There’s a new update available that solves your display problems. Be sure to install the new 0.97 version, that is compatible with the Aggregate theme.

Thank you for pointing out the issue.

Rui Oliveira
- 29 Jun 2012 - 13:28

Rui,

I’m having the same problem as a previous commenter — the sharing icons are being displayed as an unordered list. Were you able to find a fix for this problem?

eCig One
- 28 Jun 2012 - 10:43

Hi Aurels,

By default, the icons should appear on a line (more lines will appear if the selected icons don’t fit on a single line). Does that happen on every browser you try?

If it does, there’s probably a CSS override of the ul and li elements. I checked out your site and already sent you an email to help you solve your problem. Hope it helps.

As for your idea about using a lightbox or a pop-up window, it is something that I already had in mind. However, in order to keep it simple and working I didn’t implement it. My priority is to make it work like is intended and then add a bit of eye candy.

Expect that changes after version 1. ;) Thanks for using Tilt Social Share Widget.

Rui Oliveira
- 15 Jun 2012 - 11:47

PLUS : Is there a way to display sharing tool not on a new window/tab but mostly like some lightbox or pup-up window ?

Aurels
- 14 Jun 2012 - 10:34

Hi, I just installed your great plugin, but the display isn’t really great : the icons are shown vertically inline, so the widget becomes quite long… Is there a way to display icons like a grid, actually, like on your own sidebar (and if possible on 2 lines) ??

Aurels
- 14 Jun 2012 - 10:28

Hi Paul,

I guess you don’t want to use it ONLY on the homepage. There’s an option to display it, or not, on pages, but that will only work for all pages, not just the homepage.

There’s no option for that, right now. However, I’m solving an issue, regarding the homepage, and I might include that option, too.

So keep your eye on the next release (I hope it won’t take more than a week or two) and thank you for using Tilt Social Share Widget.

Rui Oliveira
- 11 Jun 2012 - 12:55

Hi Matthew,

I like both your ideas and will take note to implement them on future releases.

Thank you for using Tilt Social Share Widget.

Rui Oliveira
- 11 Jun 2012 - 12:51

I dont want the Tilt social share to show on the home page… is this possible some how?

Paul
- 10 Jun 2012 - 13:25

I just started using your plugin, and it’s great so far. I do have two suggestions/questions, though:

1: Add a ‘Like on Facebook” in addition to/instead of ‘Share’. It seems that Facebook is trying to get people to use ‘Like’ and drop ‘share.

2: Is it possible to insert the share buttons via a shortcode instead of in a widget? When looking at the main page of a blog that shows the 10 most recent posts, it would be nice to have the social buttons on each post.

Anyway, thanks for the great plugin. Keep up the good work!

Hi Ray,

Thanks for using Tilt Social Share Widget.

I did some investigation about Houzz, and unfortunately I couldn’t find a simple link code for it. The process of sharing something on that site is a little more complicated than the ones that Tilt Social Share uses.

But if someone has a simple link code for it, I’ll be more than glad to add it.

Thanks for your plugin. Would love it if you would add houzz. We are architects and this is a fantastic site for residential ideas.

Hi all,

I just made a new update to the plugin to solve some issues that you pointed out. Thanks for your input.

I also noted that the icon for StumbleUpon is outdated. Why didn’t I noticed before? I could have update it with this version, after all I did make 4 new icons. Oh well, I hope to have it up until the end of the week.

Thanks again!

Rui Oliveira
- 4 Apr 2012 - 23:11

Hi Arrisje,

Amazingly, despite being a Pinterest user, I hadn’t think about adding it to the plugin. I think it is a great idea! I’ll be adding that to the next release.

Thank you!

About two weeks ago the icons showed up beautifully on the sidebar (HOME and PAGES), albeit mysteriously…as they had only been a list before per my previous posting. I assumed a fix was applied…

But now, I’m back to the mysterious list – Socials on my sidebar (HOME and PAGES)??? NO ICONS…what gives (http://www.thedimensionzone.com/blog/)… Not done anything other than add posts.

Hi lori,

Are you using wp_head() and wp_footer() on your theme?

Rui Oliveira
- 23 Jan 2012 - 22:47

the CSS file is not showing in the HTML when I do a view-source on my site, so the icon .png file will not load.

lori
- 19 Jan 2012 - 20:07

Hi Felicia,

Thanks for trying Tilt Social Share Widget.

For the widget to work, you must have 2 functions in your theme:
wp_head();
wp_footer();

Any good theme has this functions. They must be placed in the head and footer area of your site. You can check the WordPress Codex:
Function Reference/wp head
Function Reference/wp footer

Try using Tilt Social Share Widget with other theme like Twenty Eleven. If it’s working there, you might be missing something in your theme.

Rui Oliveira
- 16 Jan 2012 - 17:02

Just uploaded this morning and have the same icon problem.

This is the code at the bottom of my footer:

Do I need to change that to enable the icons? Terribly code ignorant, so whatever help you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks again for the feedback.

There’s a new version (0.6) of the Tilt Social Share Widget that solves the icons problem. Please update it and everything should be fine.

Hope you can use it now. Have fun.

What now?

Hi,

I have the same problem. I just have a list showing. I looked and I do in fact have the wp footer function on my footer.php page.

Thanks

- 13 Jan 2012 - 20:03

Hi Jari,

Thanks for trying Tilt Social Share Widget.

If it’s just displaying a list and you have checked the option Use Tilt Social Share CSS and icons, it’s because the CSS is not kicking in. Make sure your theme uses the wp_footer() function. This function is important to load things like CSS files used by widgets.

Rui Oliveira

Great plug-in, but I can’t make the icons appear as you have them in this column! All I get is a list. What do I need to do to get the icons for the Social’s ?
